Miscellaneous Information
Herbert’s was born on 20 November 1918 at Sarnia, Ontario. His father was a chef, born at Prescott, Ontario and his mother was born at Alloa, Scotland. He had a brother Donald who was serving in the navy and two sisters: Margaret Olive and another, Agnes, who had sadly died in 1928. He attended Wortley Road school 1924-1934 followed by London South Collegiate 1934 1938. His sport interests were swimming, skating, rugby and basketball and his hobbies were making model aircraft and collecting unusual currency. Herbert worked as a grocer’s clerk for Frank C. Smith, of Market Square, London, Ontario, between 1930-1940. He then enlisted on 17 July 1940. |
After training Herbert was posted to the U.K. and he embarked from Canada on 16 July 1941. He was then at 3 PRC on 16 August 1941, 1 AOS 24 August 1941, 1659 CU 25 April 1943, and 419 Squadron on 16 May 1943. On 12 June 1943 Herbert very sadly lost his life. |

Operation | Düsseldorf. 783 aircraft. 38 losses (4.9%). PFF marking was accurate but one Mosquito inadvertently released some target indicators far from the target, confusing the main force and causing many bombs to fall in open countryside. Nevertheless, much damage was caused to the centre of Düsseldorf with at least 130 acres laid waste 1292 people were killed and 140000 people bombed out. 42 businesses that contributed to the war effort were put completely out of action and a further 35 were put on reduced output. 8 ships were sunk or damaged. |
